Cleaning & Prevention

A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental Team to preserve
the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence
of dental diseases and conditions.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is
continued in the dental office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote,
restore, and maintain your oral health.

Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also
great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy,
confident, beautiful smile.

Bone Grafting

At El Paseo Dental Care in Palm Desert, we need to ensure that you have adequate bone strength to support a dental implant before completing the procedure. Numerous problems can cause the bone surrounding the supporting teeth to erode, including the following:

  • Bone defects or infection
  • Acid erosion
  • Cracked teeth
  • Extensive cavities
  • Bone is too thin or short to support implants
  • Untreated periodontal disease
  • Missing teeth
  • Other medical conditions
  • Poorly-fitting dentures
  • Bone density weakness

A successful bone graft allows you to generate new bone to provide support for your dental implants.

How a bone graft works

Your oral surgeon uses a scalpel to remove a small amount of bone from an area with more to spare. Next, he/she transfers the extracted bone to the intended implant area. You are under local anesthesia the entire time.

If your oral surgeon needs to remove and transfer a large amount of bone, he/she might need to cut your gum tissue wider to get a better look at the bone. This procedure is known as reflecting a full thickness periosteal flap.

Once you have healed from your bone graft, you’re ready to move on to receive your dental implants. Please contact El Paseo Dental Care at 760-340-9645 to schedule a consultation to find out if dental implants are right for you.
