Cleaning & Prevention

A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental Team to preserve
the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence
of dental diseases and conditions.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is
continued in the dental office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote,
restore, and maintain your oral health.

Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also
great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy,
confident, beautiful smile.

Sealants

Dental sealants are a great tool for preventing cavities in hard-to-reach areas. They are typically recommended for children between ages 6 and 14, but patients of virtually all ages can benefit from their application. Dental sealants are made from specially designed dental resin or plastic. They are carefully applied in liquid form onto the teeth in a thin layer. The sealant then quickly hardens and bonds directly onto the tooth, sometimes with the aid of a curing light. Sealants can remain effective for as long as a decade, but they still be checked for wear during every dental check-up.
